Packing and Storing Your Belongings During a Home Renovation

A renovation changes how belongings need to be handled before the first wall is painted or floor is lifted. Furniture may obstruct access, boxes will need to be moved repeatedly and items left in adjoining rooms can become difficult to reach. Clearing the work area in advance gives the contractor room to operate and lets you decide where everything will go.

Temporary storage Bangkok residents can access during the work is useful for belongings that need to leave the property. Plan the removal around the contractor’s sequence, including any corridor or lift restrictions. Sending everything away at once may be unnecessary if different rooms are being renovated at different times.

Decide what leaves and what stays accessible

Walk through the proposed works with the contractor and establish which areas must be empty. Include the route used for materials and equipment, since a room outside the renovation may still be needed for access. Agree when furniture must leave before arranging collection.

Separate the belongings you will use during the works from those you can pack until completion. Documents, chargers, everyday clothes and essential kitchen items should remain available wherever you are staying. Keep tools and materials needed by the contractor out of household storage boxes.

Make a simple inventory with a unique reference number for each box or larger item. Photographs are useful for recording furniture condition and showing how fittings were assembled. Save the inventory somewhere you can reach without opening a packed computer or searching a stored folder.

Pack for handling and retrieval

Choose boxes that suit their contents. Books become heavy quickly, so smaller cartons are usually more manageable than filling a large one. Wrap fragile items individually and prevent movement within the box, while keeping weight off delicate edges and handles.

For furniture that can be dismantled, follow the assembly instructions in reverse and keep fittings together in labelled bags. Record which part belongs to which item before similar pieces become mixed. Ask a remover about awkward or heavy furniture rather than attempting a dismantling method that could damage it.

Useful supplies for packing

  • Sturdy cartons in manageable sizes and tape suitable for closing them.
  • Protective wrapping and padding appropriate to the surfaces being covered.
  • Labels, a marker and small bags for screws and other fittings.

Check the storage provider’s restrictions before including renovation supplies. MeSpace excludes flammable and hazardous materials, along with other prohibited items, so household paint and similar products should not simply be added to the load.

Place boxes you may need during the work where they can be reached. A detailed label helps little if the relevant carton is behind furniture that requires several people to move.

Bring belongings back in stages

Agree a return date after the contractor confirms the relevant rooms are ready. Allow for cleaning and any remaining work before unpacking soft furnishings or placing furniture against newly finished surfaces; ask the contractor about the finishes used.

Return larger pieces first so they can be positioned while the room is clear. Check each item against the inventory as it comes in, and retain labelled fittings until reassembly is complete.
